- There are a few things to try, First of all, what type of Video
- Card do you have. If it has an S3 chip on it, then you can't use
- COM2, or COM4. This is a problem I've had with Stealth SE PCI, but
- the Stealth 64 VESA, and Stealth 64 3200 PCI seem to work flawlessly
- with Win95.
- Microsoft had me try the following...
- Go into the System/Device Manager
- Remove the Modem, and the Com port 2
- Now, exit Device Mgr, then go into Control Panel/Add New
- Hardware. Let it search your system. It should detect the COM port,
- and the modem. Or you may have to add the modem manually.
-
- The freezing is not an IRQ problem. When devices freeze beyond
- CTRL-ALT-DEL, look for I/O address conflicts.
-
- I had to buy a $20 Serial/Parallel card that would allow me to
- configure COM1, and COM3 to I/O address 378 and 37F. This solved my
- problem of only having 1 com port, and the 2nd not being recognized.
-
- My friend had similar problems... he had 2 serial ports on the
- motherboard, I had to assign the one port to COM3, and then the
- Internal modem on COM2 was recognized by Win95.
-
- As for port speed, I'd check to see what type UART chips you
- have. You can do this by running a neat program in the
- WINDOWS\MSAPPS\MSINFO\MSINFO.EXE This will tell you lots of
- valuable stuff about your system. Excellent for troubleshooting.
-
- Also, you can tell Windows to either not to use Auto
- Configurations, in Device Manger under the Resources tab, which you
- can manually tell Win95 what to use.
- Or you can reserve it in the Reserved Resources section of Device
- Mgr.
-
- Good Luck
